                      Google Earth Sights II

Giant Sand Dunes in China Make Amazing Patterns
In the southwest part of Xinjiang, China, lies the 337,000 square/mile Taklamakan Desert. Its dunes are impressive and clearly visible from space. The patterns created by particles of sands and winds represent an expression of fractal structures that defy scale.  The giant dunes could easily be mistaken for the smaller-scale representation found in the ripples of sand on a beach.  From the marker, zoom in and pan east (right) to see the beautiful structure of the shifting sands.

                      The Google Earth coordinates are:

                      80°45’20.16”  E

                      Markings in Prairie Grass
In a prairie field in southern Illinois, peculiar paths twist throughout the tall stands of grass. The paths are not the result of the result of human activity.  From the topography and an understanding of the wildlife, we can explain the paths as the movement of deer from the patches of timber to graze on tender grasses and drink from the creek that meanders through the area.

                      Game Show Wipeout Filming Location
Wipeout is filmed at 25975 Sand Canyon Road on a farm in southern California.  In many of the episodes, viewers can see quick views of the numerous machine sheds and outbuildings the machinists and set designers use to produce the set pieces--though a great deal of effort goes into shooting with the trees that line the property as a backdrop.  The best markers for the Wipeout location are the large pools (lagoons) into which the engineers place the padded set pieces and machinery that make up the fantastic obstacle courses.  You can find much of the equipment openly stored in lots that surround the lagoons—along with the many buildings used to construct and house the set.

                      The Volcano House
Perched atop an extinct volcano, The Volcano House  dominates Silver Valley outside Newberry Springs, CA.  A road to the top twists around the dark rock reaching the flying-saucer-shaped house. Designed for use by an astronomer, the circular house provides views of the entire sky revealed by the darkness of its remotes, desert location between Los Angles and Los Vegas.  In 2012, it was currently listed at $700,000 and consisted of a guest house, 66-acres including the lake situated nearby the volcanic perch.
(To find the property from the marker: Pan right three times then Pan down four times.)
